Free Dholak Simulator — Play Indian Dholak Online

The dholak is one of India's most beloved folk instruments — heard at weddings, festivals, Bollywood songs and devotional music across the subcontinent. Our Dholak Simulator recreates authentic dayan (right high-pitched head) and bayan (left deep bass head) sounds using Web Audio API synthesis. Features 8 bols (syllables) — Na, Tin, Te, Ge for dayan and Dha, Dhin, Dha+, Ka for bayan — matching traditional Indian percussion notation.

Taals — Indian Rhythm Cycles

Indian classical and folk music uses rhythmic cycles called taals. Our simulator includes 15+ taals — Teentaal (16 beats), Keherwa (8 beats), Dadra (6 beats), Bhajani (8 beats), Kaharba (8 beats) and many popular Bollywood rhythms. Each taal shows the bol sequence and auto-plays on the dholak. The live looper lets you record your own patterns and layer rhythms.

Frequently Asked Questions

The dholak has 8 fundamental bols — Dayan (right head): Na (key A, closed tone), Tin (key S, open ring), Te (key D, semi-open), Ge (key F, rim shot). Bayan (left head): Dha (key J, full bass), Dhin (key K, open bass), Dha+ (key L, bass with dayan combined), Ka (key semicolon, muted bass). Click the colored bol buttons or use keyboard keys. On mobile tap any button directly.

15 taals are available across Classical, Folk, Bollywood, Devotional and Qawwali categories — Teentaal (16 beats), Keherwa (8 beats), Dadra (6 beats), Rupak (7 beats), Jhaptal (10 beats), Ektaal (12 beats), Bhajani, Kaharba, Bollywood patterns, Qawwali, Garba, Bhangra, Lavani and a Simple 4 for beginners. Switch to Taals mode, click any taal card and it plays automatically. Click again to stop.

The dayan is the smaller right-side head that produces high-pitched tones — Na, Tin, Te, Ge are its bols. The bayan is the larger left-side head coated with a black syahi paste that produces deep bass tones — Dha, Dhin, Ka are its bols. Dha+ combines both heads simultaneously for the full combined sound used in most taals on the sam (first beat).

Switch to Looper mode, select loop length (1, 2 or 4 bars), click Record Loop and play your rhythm on the dholak. After the bar length ends the loop automatically plays back continuously. Your recorded beats appear as colored dots — orange for dayan, red for bayan. Click Stop to pause playback or Clear to start fresh with a new rhythm.

Laya means rhythmic tempo in Indian classical music. The Laya button starts a metronome — a steady click that helps you maintain consistent tempo while playing. Adjust the BPM slider (40 to 200) to set your desired speed. The metronome plays a louder click on beat 1 and softer clicks on other beats. Click Laya again to stop it.

Switch to Record mode and click Start. Play any combination of bols, taals or looper — everything is captured in real time. Click Stop when done and preview with the built-in audio player. Click Download to save as a WebM audio file. Works best in Google Chrome. Share as a voice note on WhatsApp or Instagram reels.
