What is Hindu Panchang?
Panchang (पंचांग) literally means "five limbs" — Vara (weekday), Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (star/constellation), Yoga, and Karan. Together these five elements determine the auspiciousness of any moment. Traditional Panchang is computed using the exact geocentric positions of the Sun and Moon.
Tithi Explained
A Tithi is the time taken for the Moon to move exactly 12° ahead of the Sun. There are 30 tithis in a lunar month — 15 in Shukla Paksha (waxing moon: Pratipada to Purnima) and 15 in Krishna Paksha (waning moon: Pratipada to Amavasya). Since a Tithi is ~23.62 hours, it doesn't always align exactly with a solar calendar day.
