Real Marimba Sound — Physical Modeling Synthesis

Real marimba sound comes from two things: the wooden bar and the resonator tube below it. Our audio engine models both precisely. The bar produces a warm fundamental tone with a characteristic inharmonic second partial at approximately 3.87× the fundamental (not 4×, as in a true harmonic series — this slight inharmonicity is exactly what gives marimba its distinctive warmth). The resonator tube amplifies and sustains the fundamental. The result is the soft, woody, singing tone that distinguishes marimba from the sharper xylophone.

Velocity-Sensitive Mallet Modes

Soft mallet gives you gentle, introspective tones ideal for melodic passages. Medium mallet is the default — balanced and versatile for all playing styles. Hard mallet produces a louder, more defined attack for rhythmic passages. Auto (Dynamic) randomizes velocity naturally, just like a real performer who varies touch. On desktop, you can also control velocity by where you click on each bar — top for loud, bottom for soft.

6 Built-in Scale & Melody Patterns

C Major Scale — the fundamental western scale, ascending and descending. Pentatonic Scale — the universal 5-note scale found in music from Japan to West Africa to India. Ode to Joy — Beethoven's iconic melody from Symphony No. 9, a classic marimba recital piece. Blues Scale — soulful and expressive, great for improvisation. Twinkle Twinkle Little Star — perfect for beginners learning to follow along. Chromatic Scale — all 12 semitones ascending and descending, essential for technique practice.

How to Play

On desktop, use keyboard shortcuts: Z X C V B N M for Octave 3 (low), Q W E R T Y U for Octave 4 (middle, most commonly used), I O P A [ for Octave 5 (high). Sharp keys use the row above natural keys. Click the bars directly on any device — tap on mobile and tablet. Use the octave navigation buttons (◀ ▶) to shift the visible range. Press Space to stop any playing pattern.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a marimba?

A marimba is a large percussion instrument with wooden bars arranged like a piano keyboard, each with a resonator tube beneath. It is struck with soft mallets to produce a warm, melodic, sustained tone. Marimbas are used in classical orchestras, solo recitals, jazz ensembles, and world music. The standard concert marimba spans 4 to 5 octaves.

Marimba vs Xylophone — what's the difference?

The marimba uses softer rubber or yarn mallets and has longer resonator tubes, producing a warmer, deeper, more sustained sound. The xylophone uses harder mallets and produces a brighter, shorter, more percussive tone. Marimbas are typically larger and have a lower range. If you love warm, singing tones, the marimba is your instrument.

Is this marimba free?

100% free, forever. No signup, no download, no ads interrupting play. Works on all modern browsers on desktop, tablet, and mobile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Keys Z X C V B N M play the 7 natural notes (C D E F G A B) in Octave 3 (low). Keys Q W E R T Y U play Octave 4 (middle — most used). Keys I O P A [ play Octave 5 (high). Sharp/flat notes use S D G H J (lower) and 2 3 5 6 7 (upper). On mobile and tablet, tap any bar directly — use the Oct 3 / Oct 4 / Oct 5 buttons to switch octave range instantly without any scrolling.

A real marimba uses soft yarn or rubber mallets and has long resonator tubes beneath each bar, producing a warm, deep, sustained woody tone. A xylophone uses hard mallets with no resonators, giving a brighter, sharper, shorter sound. Our Virtual Marimba physically models both — the inharmonic second partial at exactly 3.87× the fundamental (not 4×) is the secret that gives marimba its characteristic warmth. You can clearly hear the difference vs our Pro Virtual Xylophone.

Soft mallet gives gentle, quiet tones perfect for slow melodies and classical pieces. Medium mallet (default) is balanced and versatile for all playing styles. Hard mallet produces a louder, sharper attack ideal for rhythmic passages. Auto (Dynamic) randomly varies the velocity naturally, simulating how a real marimba player varies touch from note to note. On desktop you can also control velocity by where you click on each bar — top of bar = louder, bottom = softer.

6 patterns are built in: C Major Scale (classical, ascending & descending), Pentatonic Scale (universal 5-note scale found in world music from India to Japan to West Africa), Ode to Joy by Beethoven (iconic Symphony No.9 theme — a classic marimba recital piece), Blues Scale (soulful C blues, great for improvisation), Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (perfect for kids and beginners to follow along), and Chromatic Scale (all 12 semitones — essential for technique practice). Each loops at 5 speed settings from 0.5x to 2x.

Three large pill buttons — Oct 3 (Low), Oct 4 (Mid), Oct 5 (High) — appear directly above the marimba bars on mobile and tablet. Tap any pill to instantly switch the visible bar range. Oct 4 is the most musical middle octave and is selected by default. On desktop, use the ◀ ▶ buttons in the toolbar or Z / X keys to shift octave up or down.

Switch to the Rec tab and click Start Recording. Play any bars or start a pattern — everything including patterns you play along with is captured in full audio quality. Click Stop when done, preview with the built-in audio player, then click Download to save as a .webm audio file. Share your marimba recording on WhatsApp, Instagram, or any social media platform.

Click the 🌈 Fun Mode button in the toolbar to switch the entire instrument to a vibrant purple, cyan, and pink neon color theme — great for kids and casual players. Click 🎸 Classic Mode to switch back to the warm rosewood and amber classic marimba look. The color change is instant with no reload needed. Both themes sound identical — only the visual style changes.

Yes, fully optimized. On mobile the bars become large square tap pads arranged in a grid — easy to hit with fingers, no tiny targets. On tablet the layout gets proper side margins and a traditional horizontal bar arrangement. All touch targets meet minimum size requirements. Works on iOS Safari, Android Chrome, and all modern browsers with no download or installation required.
