What does each digit in an Indian PIN code mean?

PIN code structure: 1st digit = postal zone (1-9, covering different geographic regions of India). 2nd digit = sub-zone (further geographic division). 3rd digit = sorting district. Last 3 digits = specific post office (001-999). For example: 342001 — 3 = Western India, 4 = Rajasthan, 2 = Jodhpur sorting district, 001 = Head Post Office.

Why might the same area have multiple PIN codes?

Large urban areas are divided into multiple postal divisions, each with its own PIN code.
