Free Djembe Drum Simulator — Play African Drum Online

The djembe is a West African drum with three distinct tones — Bass (deep center hit), Tone (mid open edge hit) and Slap (sharp bright edge snap). Our simulator recreates all three tones using Web Audio API synthesis tuned to match real djembe acoustics. Features live loop recording, 12+ rhythm patterns from African and world music traditions, extra percussion sounds and studio-quality recording.

African Rhythm Patterns to Learn

The patterns panel includes classic West African rhythms — Kuku (6/8 joyful), Djole (8/8 ceremonial), Soli (fast 6/8), Tiriba (12/8 deep), Woloso (medium celebratory) and many more. Each pattern shows the bass-tone-slap sequence visually. Use the Live Looper to record your own patterns and layer rhythms. Practice with the metronome at any BPM from 40 to 200.

Frequently Asked Questions

The djembe has 3 fundamental tones — Bass (key B or click center zone) produces a deep low boom by striking the center with a flat hand. Tone (key T or click ring zone) gives a mid open ring by striking the edge with fingers. Slap (key S or click outer zone) creates a sharp bright crack by snapping fingers on the edge. The large colored buttons below the drum are the easiest way to play on mobile.

Switch to Patterns mode to see 12 authentic West African rhythms including Kuku, Djole, Soli, Tiriba, Woloso and Afrobeat. Click any pattern card to start playing it automatically. The colored dots show the beat sequence — red is Bass, yellow is Tone, blue is Slap. The current beat highlights as the pattern plays. Click again to stop.

Switch to Looper mode, choose your loop length (1, 2 or 4 bars), click Start Loop and play your rhythm. After the loop length ends it automatically plays back and loops continuously. You can see your recorded beats as colored dots in the loop grid. The loop repeats endlessly until you click Stop or Clear to start fresh.

Six extra percussion instruments are available in the left panel — Hi-Hat for a crisp metallic tick, Shaker for a sandy rattle, Cowbell for a resonant metal clang, Clap for a sharp hand clap, Kick for a deep bass drum thump and Rim for a short woody click. Keyboard shortcuts: H for hi-hat, C for clap, K for kick.

Click the Metro button in the toolbar to start the metronome at the current BPM. Adjust the BPM slider to any tempo from 40 to 200. The beat counter dots light up showing the current beat in the bar. The metronome makes a higher click on beat 1 and a softer click on other beats. Click Metro again to stop it.

Switch to Record mode and click Start Recording. Play any combination of bass, tone, slap and extra percussion — everything is captured in real time. Click Stop when done and preview with the built-in audio player. Click Download to save as a WebM audio file. Works best in Google Chrome.
