Virtual Saraswati Veena — 21 Strings, 3 Octaves, Carnatic Raags Online Free

The Virtual Saraswati Veena is the most authentic free online veena simulator. Modeled on the professional Saraswati Veena used in Carnatic classical concerts, our virtual version covers 21 notes across all 3 sthayi — Mandra (low), Madhya (middle), and Tara (high) — with authentic Carnatic swara labels including komal (flat) and teevra (sharp) variants, and a unique Gamaka mode for ornamental pitch bends.

Real Veena Sound — Physical String Modeling

The Saraswati Veena produces its characteristic warm, resonant sound from a plucked string vibrating over a jackfruit wood body. Our audio engine models the inharmonic partials of a plucked string — fundamental, second, third, fourth, and fifth harmonics — with the slight pitch droop on attack that gives veena its characteristic settling sound. A subtle tambura drone adds sympathetic resonance in the lower octave. Concert hall reverb completes the acoustic picture.

6 Carnatic Raag Patterns

Raag Mohanam — evening, pleasant and devotional, pentatonic scale. Raag Bhairavi — morning, devotional and serene, uses all 7 swaras. Raag Kalyani — evening, romantic and majestic, teevra Ma. Raag Hindolam — early morning, peaceful and gentle. Raag Todi — morning, serious and profound. Shankarabharanam — morning, auspicious, Carnatic equivalent of Bilawal. Each plays authentic arohana and avarohana in a loop at 5 speed settings.

Gamaka Effect

Gamaka is the ornamental pitch oscillation that is the soul of Carnatic veena music. Enable the Gamaka toggle to add automatic pitch bends — when you pluck any string, it slides to the next swara and returns, simulating the left-hand pressing and bending technique of real veena performance. This single feature transforms ordinary note plucking into authentic Carnatic phrasing.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Saraswati Veena is the most prominent classical string instrument of South India, associated with Goddess Saraswati — the deity of learning and arts. It has a long fretted neck, a large resonating bowl (kudai) made of jackfruit wood, and 4 main melody strings plus 3 drone strings. The veena is played by plucking strings with the right hand while the left hand presses and slides on frets to produce gamaka — ornamental note bends. It is the primary instrument of Carnatic classical music and is one of the oldest instruments in India.

Click or tap any string to pluck it and hear the sound. Use the three octave buttons — Mandra Sthayi (low), Madhya Sthayi (middle), Tara Sthayi (high) — to switch between octave ranges. On desktop, keyboard shortcuts are Z X C V B N M 1-5 for Mandra, Q W E R T Y U I O P A S for Madhya, and D F G H J K L for Tara. Enable Gamaka mode in the toolbar to add automatic pitch bend ornaments when plucking. Press Space bar to stop any playing raag pattern instantly.

Six Carnatic raags are available: Raag Mohanam (evening, pleasant and devotional — pentatonic scale, Sa Ri Ga Pa Dha), Raag Bhairavi (morning, devotional and serene — uses all 7 swaras with komal notes), Raag Kalyani (evening, romantic and majestic — teevra Ma is the highlight), Raag Hindolam (early morning, peaceful and gentle — pentatonic with komal notes), Raag Todi (morning, serious and profound — complex raag with komal Ri Ga Dha), and Shankarabharanam (morning, auspicious — Carnatic equivalent of Bilawal, all shuddha swaras). Each raag plays authentic arohana and avarohana in a continuous loop at 5 speed settings.

Gamaka refers to the ornamental gliding and oscillation of notes that is the defining characteristic of Carnatic veena playing. On a real veena, the left hand presses the string on a fret and physically bends it to slide the pitch to the next note and back, creating a characteristic wavy, expressive quality. Enable the Gamaka toggle in the toolbar — when active, each note you pluck automatically slides to the next higher swara and returns, simulating this ornamental technique. Gamaka is what makes veena music sound distinctively different from piano or organ.

Sthayi refers to the octave register in Carnatic music. Mandra Sthayi is the lower octave — deep, bass-like tones used for serious and profound raags. Madhya Sthayi is the middle octave — the most commonly used register for melody, where most Carnatic compositions are performed. Tara Sthayi is the high octave — bright, piercing tones used for fast passages and emotional peaks in a performance. Our virtual veena covers all three with 12 notes in Mandra, 12 notes in Madhya, and 9 notes in Tara Sthayi.

In Carnatic music, Shuddha (natural) swaras are the standard notes — Sa Ri Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni in their natural positions shown in purple on the veena. Komal (flat) swaras are lowered versions of Ri, Ga, Dha, Ni — shown in pink on the veena strings. Teevra (sharp) applies only to Ma (Teevra Ma or Ma2) — shown in amber/gold on the veena. The combination of Shuddha, Komal, and Teevra notes defines the unique character of each Carnatic raag — for example Raag Kalyani uses Teevra Ma while Raag Bhairavi uses Komal Ri Ga Dha Ni.
