What is a robots.txt file and why is it important?

Robots.txt is a text file at your website's root (yoursite.com/robots.txt) that tells search engine crawlers which pages to crawl and which to ignore. It prevents Google from indexing admin pages, login areas, duplicate content, and temporary pages that should not appear in search results. Misconfigured robots.txt can accidentally block your entire website from Google.

How do I prevent my WordPress admin from being indexed by Google?

Add to robots.txt: "Disallow: /wp-admin/" to block the admin area. Also block: /wp-login.php, /xmlrpc.php, /wp-includes/, and any staging/test directories. Our generator creates these standard WordPress-specific blocks automatically. After creating robots.txt, add it to your WordPress root directory and verify it using Google Search Console's robots.txt tester.

Can robots.txt completely prevent a page from appearing in Google?

Robots.txt Disallow prevents crawling but does not guarantee pages won't appear in search results. Google may still show a disallowed URL if it finds links to it from other sites — just without a description. To completely prevent a page from appearing in search results, use the meta robots noindex tag directly on the page in addition to robots.txt.
